Over the following months, this graft integrates with the existing bone, building enough height and density to support an implant.

Bone grafting is a broader term for adding graft material to any area of the jaw that needs reinforcement, whether that is a localized dip in the ridge, a larger area following tooth loss, or the foundation for a full-arch solution like All-on-4 or All-on-6. Both procedures are performed under local anesthesia, with sedation available for patients who prefer it. The graft itself needs time to fully integrate with the existing bone — typically several months — before an implant can be placed on top of it. In some cases, where there is enough existing bone, the graft and implant can be placed in the same appointment, shortening the overall timeline.
